Frequently Asked Questions

1. How is counselling different from talking to a friend or family member?

While support from friends and family is valuable, counselling provides a safe, neutral, and non-judgemental space with a professional trained to use evidence-based approaches. I will help you uncover patterns, process emotions, and explore deeper issues with structure and confidentiality.

2. Will you benefit from counselling?

I believe anyone can benefit from counselling : whether you’re dealing with stress, anxiety, grief, relationship or work challenges, or major life changes. Counselling isn’t just for difficult times; it can also deepen self-awareness, support personal growth, build resilience, and enhance your overall well-being by providing tools and strategies to cope.

3. How do I schedule a counselling session?

I offer a free 20-minute consultation where we can talk, explore what brings you to therapy, and see if we’re a good fit. You’re welcome to ask questions and get a sense of my approach before committing.

4. What happens in your first session?

Your first session focuses on discussing your concerns, goals, and expectations. I will also review confidentiality, fees, and policies. It may take one or two sessions to understand your needs fully and create a personalised treatment plan for moving forward.

5. How will sessions be conducted?

The first session is longer (75 minutes) and held online to help me get to know you and understand your needs. After that, sessions can take place either face-to-face in the counselling room or online, depending on what works best for you. All sessions are conducted in English.

6. How long does therapy take?

Some people may come for a single session when they require a safe space to unload, gain perspective, or clarify a situation. But the majority benefit from ongoing work, as it allows deeper exploration, consistent support, and meaningful progress over time.

The length of therapy depends on your goals and circumstances. Some people benefit from short-term work (about 6–12 sessions), while others prefer longer-term support. Your treatment plan is usually established within the first one or two sessions and reviewed regularly as your needs evolve.

7. What are the fees? Are there subsidies?

Therapy works best with a commitment to several sessions, as meaningful progress takes time. I also understand that finances can make it challenging to continue, so I’ve kept my fees as affordable as possible to ensure therapy remains accessible.

My fees are $130 for the first online session (75 minutes), $110 for subsequent online sessions (60 minutes), and $180 for face-to-face sessions (60 mins).  Subsidies are available on a case-by-case basis for clients who may need financial support.  Please refer to my Fees Page for more details.

8. Is counselling confidential?

Yes. Everything you share is kept strictly confidential in line with professional ethics and the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA). The only exceptions are when there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, disclosure of abuse, or if required by law or a court order.

9. What if I don’t feel therapy is working for me?

It’s important to share this with me. Together, we can review your goals, adjust the approach if needed, or consider referral to another therapist. Therapy works best when it feels collaborative and supportive and tailored to your needs.

10. What if I’m in crisis or feel unsafe between sessions?

Counselling is not a crisis service. If you feel unsafe or at risk of harming yourself or anyone you know, please immediately contact emergency services (999) or seek immediate help at the nearest hospital. For ongoing clients, I will help you develop a crisis plan with local support contacts. Other helplines include:
